Why Forms Demand a Tiny Photo

Job portals, exam applications and government websites often set strict upload limits — a passport photo under 20KB, a signature under 10KB, or a document photo under 50KB or 100KB. Upload anything bigger and the form rejects it. A photo straight from a phone camera is usually 2–5 MB, which is 20–100 times too large.

The fix is to compress the image until it drops under the required size, without making it unreadable.

How to Reduce Image Size to a KB Target

Step 1: Open the Compress Image tool. Step 2: Upload your JPG or PNG photo. Step 3: Use the quality slider to shrink the file. The new size is shown instantly, so lower the quality until it drops under your target (for example below 50KB). Step 4: Download the smaller image, ready to upload to the form.

Tips to Hit a Specific Size

  • Resize first, then compress. A photo doesn't need to be 4000px wide for a form. If you also need set dimensions, use the Resize Image tool to bring it down to, say, 600px before compressing.
  • JPG compresses smaller than PNG for photographs, so save photos as JPG when the form allows it.
  • Watch the live size readout and nudge the slider until you're just under the limit — that keeps the most quality while meeting the cap.

What About Quality?

Compressing to 20–100KB will reduce fine detail, but for a passport photo or scanned signature on a form that's completely fine — it still looks clear at the size it's displayed.
